Some names are legendary in the history of the WSOP. Perry Green is certainly one of them, as the American is part of the journey of the world’s main poker series. Owner of 3 bracelets, the first won exactly 50 years ago, he also made appearances in two Main Event final tables.

Thus, the first time Green reached the final of the series’ most important tournament ended in a historic “heads-up.” This happened in 1981, when the player was defeated by Stu Ungar, a name many still consider the greatest poker player of all time. Ten years later, Perry Green returned to the Main Event final table and finished in 5th place.
However, even after a long career in cards, Perry Green remains active in WSOP tournaments. At 90 years old, he entered Event #4 Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better and advanced to Day 2 of the competition. The series bracelet record holder, Phil Hellmuth, posted a photo alongside the legend on social media. “Ninety years old and still young, great guy”, wrote the American star.
In addition to this, Perry Green gave an interview to “Poker.org” and spoke about the changes he has seen in poker over the decades. Even with the scene completely different from the beginning of his career, his advice remains the same. “Play for fun. Enjoy life. Go to work, have children, grandchildren, and a family. That’s what life is really about”, he declared.

The card friends

Besides providing great fortunes, poker also creates lasting friendships. Perry Green always maintained a close relationship with another WSOP legend, Doyle Brunson, who passed away in 2023. Born in Alaska, Green organized a special fishing trip to welcome the eternal “Texas Dolly,” but the company on the trip hid an unusual curiosity.
Thus, Green told “Poker.org” that Brunson was being pursued by justice at that time. The curious detail is that one of the participants in the fishing trip was precisely an FBI agent, information he preferred to hide from his friend. “I didn’t tell any of them who the other was. When Doyle found out, he just laughed a lot”, he revealed.
Finally, the legendary player also recalled the “heads-up” against Stu Ungar in the WSOP Main Event. Green said he played a hand using T2 of clubs, a combination immortalized by Doyle Brunson. On the flop, he hit J98 with two clubs and put all the chips in the center of the table. However, Stu Ungar held AJ of clubs and won the pot. “From there, it was downhill”, Perry Green concluded.
