Few sayings describe poker as well as “a minute to learn, a lifetime to master.” Especially after the online game boom, with Chris Moneymaker’s victory in 2003, the level of poker analysis and study has evolved significantly.

However, no matter how complex the game may seem now, it is easy and quick to learn enough to start having fun and exercising your reasoning by practicing the mind sport. First, it is necessary to understand that poker includes several different variations, played with different rules and dynamics. In this guide, however, we will cover what is by far the most played variation: No Limit Texas Hold’em. So, here we will help you understand the rules and objectives of the game, as well as learn a little about its history.

The objective in Texas Hold’em

In general, the player who wins a hand in Texas Hold’em is the one with the best cards in the game: Ace is the highest and 2 is the lowest.

The general objective in poker is to win all the tournament chips. This way, the player becomes the champion. On the other hand, when a player loses their chips, they are eliminated.

The rules of poker – how to play

But, after all, how do you actually play poker? In each round, two players make mandatory bets, called small blind (SB) and big blind (BB), with the small blind being half the value of the big blind. The SB is the player immediately to the left of the one in the dealer position, identified by a button on the table, with the BB coming next. You can understand the positions and their names in more detail by clicking here.

Each player then receives two hole cards. The betting round called pre-flop then begins, meaning the one that happens before any community cards are revealed on the table.

The dealer button indicates who will be the small blind and the big blind

The first to act at this point is the player immediately to the left of the big blind, who has the option to fold the hand, match the big blind amount (call), or increase the bet (raise). Since the variation in question is “No Limit,” players can bet as many chips as they want in each round, including all they have, the famous “all in.”

The action proceeds around the table, clockwise, with all players having the option to fold, call the current bet, or raise. After this round, if there are still at least two players in the hand, meaning two or more who did not fold pre-flop, the first three community cards are dealt. These cards are called the flop, and everything that happens from then on is called post-flop.

And after the flop?

With the flop revealed, we move on to a new betting round, identical to the previous one, but starting from the first player still in the hand to the left of the dealer position. Once the round is completed and there are still players with cards, another community card is dealt, called the turn.

We then move on to another betting round, followed by the reveal of the last community card, the river, which can bring glory or despair to many players. With all five cards revealed on the table, the so-called board, the last betting round takes place. Then, we reach the moment called the showdown, meaning when all players who have not yet folded reveal their cards to determine the winner based on the hand rankings.

How to play poker: Hand Rankings

To determine the winning hand, the best possible five-card hand using the two hole cards and the five community cards (also called the board) is considered, through a simple and intuitive hand ranking. The sequence of card values, from weakest to strongest, is 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10(T), J, Q, K, A.

The order from the worst to the best possible hand is: high card, one pair, two pairs, three of a kind, straight, flush, full house, four of a kind, straight flush, and royal straight flush. Let’s understand the names.

High card:

This is used when none of the players manage to make even a pair, so the strongest hand is the one with the highest cards. Example: One player holds AK and another A9 on a 458Q3 board. The best possible five-card hand for the first is AKQ85, beating the second player’s AQ985.

One pair:

This occurs when the player makes a hand with two cards of the same rank. If both players have a pair, the one with the higher pair wins.
Example: a player with KQ against one with QJ on a KJ972 board, the first has a pair of kings with KKQJ9 and the second has a pair of jacks with JJKQ9, losing the hand

Two pairs:

As the name suggests, this happens when the hand formed has two sets of cards of the same rank. If both players have the same two pairs, the remaining card, called the kicker, determines who will be the winner.
Example: AK against AQ on a A9982 board, both have pairs of aces and nines, but the first player’s hand is AA99K while the second’s is AA99Q.

Three of a kind:

This occurs when the hand has three cards of the same rank. Example: the hand K9 on a 9Q729 board, forming the hand 999KQ.

Straight:

Also self-explanatory, this represents a hand of five cards in sequence, regardless of suits. Example: the hand 67 on a K45A3 board, forming the straight 34567.

Flush:

Unlike the previous one, here what matters is the suit of the cards and not their order. A flush is formed with five cards of the same suit. If two players have a flush, the one formed with the highest cards wins.

Example: the hand QJ of hearts against A3 of hearts on a K56A9 board, with the first three cards also being of hearts. Thus, the first player would have formed a flush of KQJ65, while the second would have the highest flush with AK653, also called a “nut flush” for having the ace.

Full house:

A full house (or full boat) is formed when the player’s hand has three of a kind and a pair. Example: the hand QQ on a Q4584 board, which forms QQQ44, called in this case a “full of queens with fours.”

Four of a kind:

Here too, there’s no room for error, four of a kind means a hand with four cards of the same rank. Example: 99 on a A9K79 board.

Straight flush:

This is easy to deduce from the name. A straight flush occurs when the hand formed is a sequence with all cards of the same suit. Example: the hand 78 of diamonds on a 456KA board with the first three cards also being of diamonds, forming 45678 of the same suit.

Royal straight flush:

This is the best possible hand in poker and the probability of it happening is only 1 in 650,000. A royal is nothing more than a straight flush from 10 to A, meaning AKQJT all of the same suit.

It is important to note that there is no obligation to use the hole cards to form your hand and that a hand can end in a tie. In this case, the pot, meaning the chips in the middle of the table, are divided. Example: one player with A9 and another with A8 on an A22J7 board. In this case, both are tied with the hand AA22J
