Eric Persson closes two casinos and fires 238 employees after filing for recovery

The financial situation of Maverick Gaming, a company led by high stakes player Eric Persson, has taken a new turn. After filing for bankruptcy protection in 2025, the company announced the closure of two casinos in Tukwila, Washington. As a result, 238 employees will lose their jobs.

Thus, according to the documentation submitted to the state of Washington, Maverick Gaming will close the Great American Casino and the Riverside Casino on November 1st. Additionally, the cuts will affect professionals from various sectors. Among them are dealers, cashiers, bartenders, cooks, and members of the administration.

However, Maverick was already struggling to balance its accounts. The company restructured debts in 2024 and later resorted to Chapter 11, a mechanism that allows reorganizing debts while the company continues its operations. In the process, the operator declared assets and liabilities between US$ 100 million and US$ 500 million.

Therefore, various factors have pressured the business in recent years. The company suffered from high operating costs, including rent expenses, while the local economy weakened. A series of layoffs in the technology sector also affected its customer base. In June 2025, S&P Global even withdrew all Maverick ratings due to insufficient information.

However, while trying to reorganize its finances, Maverick Gaming also reduced its presence in the state. In May, the company submitted notifications related to the Crazy Moose Mountlake Casino, Silver Dollar Mill Creek Casino, and Silver Dollar SeaTac Casino. Subsequently, the closures and layoffs at these locations took effect on July 31.

Nevertheless, the company still maintains about 20 gaming properties. Restructuring director Jeff Seery acknowledged the problems faced by the company. “Despite successes in recovering many of the acquired gaming assets, the company faced several factors that severely limited its growth in recent years”, he stated in the recovery process.

Finally, the crisis also distanced Eric Persson from high stakes poker broadcasts. The businessman has participated in programs such as High Stakes Poker and Hustler Casino Live, as well as starring in a well-known heads-up against Phil Hellmuth. Since the bankruptcy filing, however, he has not appeared in live-streamed games.
