Owner of three bracelets, the 55-year-old Canadian adopted a very conservative strategy throughout the decision, but in a moment of all or nothing, made a call that cost him survival in the competition.

With two pairs, one of them on the board, Greg Mueller failed to make the correct read of Lauri Saaskilahti’s hand. Holding KK, the Finn knew how to hide his pocket pair through actions along the streets, and when he put the Canadian against the wall, he extracted the maximum.
The action that resulted in Greg Mueller’s fall
Right after consecutive eliminations, the WSOP Main Event final table reached 3-handed at blinds 1,500,000/3,000,000 bb ante 3,000,000. Only on the second hand with three players at the table, Saaskilahti received KK in the small blind and opted for the limp. Mueller, who had T4o in the big blind, checked.
The flop showed AA4 with two clubs, the same suit as Mueller’s T. Neither bet, and the turn showed the J of hearts, the first card of that suit on the board. Saaskilahti, this time, bet 1 big blind, receiving the call.

The river, finally, brought the 3 of diamonds to the table, and the Finn made an overbet putting the Canadian all in. Mueller, with 34,000,000 chips behind, entered a long thoughtful moment. With pairs of A and 4, he reconsidered the entire hand’s trajectory up to the river.
After two or three minutes, the Canadian opted for the call, saying goodbye to the competition upon seeing Saaskilahti prove he had the pairs of A and K. Thus, Greg Mueller pocketed $3,750,000 for third place, and the action of the second day of the final table ended, reserving the heads-up between Saaskilahti and Lucas Jumalon for this Wednesday (5).
