One of the most well-known names in poker history is Doyle Brunson. The “Texas Dolly” passed away in May 2023, at the age of 89, and was also affectionately nicknamed the “Godfather of Poker”. However, the legacy of Doyle Brunson will not continue in this WSOP Main Event. This is because, at the start of Day 8, Todd Brunson, son of the poker legend, was hoping to reach the final table. The achievement would have been even more significant as it happened exactly 50 years after his father’s first world title.
Nevertheless, Todd Brunson‘s mission was difficult. He started the day with one of the smallest stacks among the 21 survivors, but quickly tripled up. With A♥K♦, he faced K♥K♣ from Brock Wilson and Q♥Q♣ from Malcolm Trayner in a pre-flop all-in early in the contest.
Thus, everything indicated that Todd Brunson‘s journey would end at that moment. The flop came 8♦2♥2♠. Then, the turn showed 9♦ and increased his chances, since besides an ace, any diamond card would complete a flush. Finally, the river revealed an A♠, which secured a huge pot and kept the American alive in the tournament.

The elimination came in a bad beat
However, while luck appeared in the triple all-in, Todd Brunson‘s farewell came in a painful bad beat. The hand occurred at level 35, with blinds at 300,000/600,000, plus the big blind ante. Todd opened a raise to 1,200,000 on the button and received a call from Malcolm Trayner in the big blind.
Next, the flop showed 8♦3♣2♣. Brunson bet 1,200,000 and got another call. Then, the turn brought J♠. This time, Todd put 2,300,000 into the pot, but Trayner responded with a check-raise to 5,500,000. Then, Brunson announced an all-in of 17,100,000, and his opponent called immediately.
Finally, Todd Brunson showed A♥A♦, while Malcolm Trayner revealed A♣J♣. The river brought the 4♣, completing his opponent’s flush and ending the campaign of Doyle Brunson‘s son in 20th place, with a prize of US$ 325,000. Thus, Todd was unable to repeat his father’s historic feat but left his mark in another edition of the WSOP Main Event.
